Central Darling Shire Council: About: Wilcannia

Wilcannia provides many services for the traveller including petrol, food, hotel and motel accommodation, a golf club as well as a beautiful caravan park situated on the banks of the Darling River. The main street of Wilcannia is lined with historic sandstone buildings and a short walk down the street will transport the visitor back in time to the days when the river was the highway to the 'Outback'. Wilcannia has a rich and vibrant history. Once known as the "Queen City of the West", it was the third largest shipping port in Australia. In the boom years of the 1880's sandstone was quarried locally for the beautiful buildings that stand today as a reminder of those heady days.

Travellers are welcome in Wilcannia and are well catered for with modern air-conditioned motels offering comfortable accommodation for overnight stays. Caravans and campers are catered for at the Victory Park Caravan Park, a pleasant spot on the banks of the Darling River with powered sites in the shade of the River Red Gums. Meals and club facilities are available at the Golf Club located on the site of the original Reschs' Brewery.

A short drive or walk around town will reveal the great sandstone buildings, historic centre Lift Bridge and old wharf that handled all that cargo so many years ago. Wilcannia has a large aboriginal community, being the traditional home of the Barkindji people (barka meaning river). Many fine traditional craftsmen in Wilcannia still practice their craft today.
