In 2025 the Local Government Election will be held for Central Darling Shire. The date for the election will be announced by the Local Government Minister.
In July 2024 the NSW Government announced plans to bring Central Darling Shire Council out of Administration.
Central Darling Shire will become a ‘Rural and Remote Council’ made up of three locally elected councillors from the community and three councillors appointed by the NSW Government with relevant expertise to support the stable and effective operation of the Council.
Workshops and drop-in sessions were held in November and December 2024 for residents of the Shire who were interested in becoming a Councillor.

Becoming a Councillor

The Office of Local Government (OLG) has a new dedicated page on its website for those interested in becoming a candidate in the next local government elections. The resources include guides and online learning tools.
The link is: Become a councillor - Office of Local Government NSW

The OLG provides a Councillor Handbook, designed to help and inform new and returning Councillors in the exercise of their functions. The Councillor Handbook is a “how to” guide to being a Councillor and provides comprehensive guidance to Councillors on all aspects of their roles and responsibilities.

Topics covered include: • An overview of local government in NSW • A Councillor’s roles, responsibilities and relationships • The Code of Conduct and guidance for acting ethically • Strategic planning and reporting • Financial Management • Support for Councillors.

Elections for Central Darling Shire Council will be carried out by the NSW Electoral Commission.
