Old Wilcannia Museum

Wilcannia has a rich and vibrant history.

The Barkindji people (barka meaning river) have been native to the area for thousands of years and to this day Wilcannia has a large Aboriginal population, where most still practise fishing and hunting, as well as reintroducing the tradition of making tools and artefacts albeit with a modern twist.

A short drive or walk around the Heritage Trail will allow you to see and read about the history of the township that includes very impressive sandstone buildings, the original ' Reschs Brewery', an historic Centre Lift Bridge and the old wharf where many a paddlesteamer with a barge/s in tow would load and unload wares, including wool, then continuing their journey up or down river to the Murray. Once known as the "Queen City of the West", Wilcannia was the third largest inland shipping port in Australia.
